When I take the time to reflect on the unique projects that we have built over the years I truly do feel fortunate.
This outdoor kitchen and dining set was co-designed with Jodi Plowe from Jodi Interior Design. She had some clients with an idea for an outdoor kitchen on their regenerative agriculture farm. They wanted to build an outdoor area where they could gather and share the fruits of their labour under a beautiful timber framed pavilion.
The clients and the interior designer had a vision for this outdoor gathering place. We were brought in to bring their vision to life. We worked with Jodi on a design for the bar/kitchen as well as a custom outdoor dining table set.
We opted to use Douglas fir for the table top, benches and seating. This was complemented with aluminum frames. All these material choices were important as this furniture would be living outside and we wanted to ensure that it could withstand the elements.
We opted to build stools into the frame of the kitchen itself because it would be set on rough and uneven flagstone ground. We didn’t want individual stools sitting on the uneven ground. The entire kitchen was built as one unit in an aluminum frame. It was designed and built around several Jackson Grill appliances including a BBQ, a double side burner, refrigerator, storage drawers and a cocktail sink. All the essential appliances needed for an outdoor kitchen. Any cladding on the kitchen that didn’t need to be fire resistant was made from Douglas Fir as well, however we burnt and combed it, which is an ancient eastern finishing technique called Sho – Sugi – Ban. In the design process we had to take water, drain and propane rough – ins into account. The kitchen was finished off with a thick concrete top from True Concrete Designs. All the woodwork was finished with an industry leading outdoor polyurethane finish for extra durability. All the aluminum was finished with a powder coated finish.
These clients now have an outdoor kitchen that provides a perfect space for them to entertain and share the fruits of their labor. This space enhances the farm's community spirit but also allows visitors to cook and enjoy meals made from fresh, sustainably grown produce. The outdoor setting offers a beautiful, natural backdrop, making it an ideal spot for gatherings and celebrations, further connecting people to the land and the sustainable practices that nurture it.
